East Peoria to hold public forum on regulation of recreational marijuana

EAST PEORIA (WEEK) — As two local communities have banned the sale of recreational marijuana, East Peoria will be holding a public forum to discuss the matter next week.

The city council will hold the forum one hour before its regular scheduled meeting at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20 at the Civic Complex, 401 W. Washington Street.

The agenda for the special meeting says the session will be a, “public forum on potential city regulation of cannabis and cannabis businesses under the recently adopted Cannabis Regulation and Taxation Act.”

No action will be taken at the special meeting.

The public will be able to comment and ask questions at the end of the working session.

In a release Aug. 16, the City stated, “State of Illinois law legalizing the use and sale of recreational marijuana provides municipalities the ability to set their own regulations regarding the sale and use of the product including zoning, location and number of the businesses that will be allowed and sales tax rates.”

So far this year, the Morton Village Board banned the sale of marijuana and El Paso passed an ordinance of its own to prohibit the sale and marijuana businesses.

Gov. JB Pritzker signed the bill into law on June 25, making marijuana legal in Illinois starting Jan. 1, 2020.
