SPRINGFIELD — It’s “Cole” hard cash for a 13-year-old from Elmwood.

Cole Caldwell’s steer was named the grand champion at the Illinois State Fair earlier this week, and on Tuesday, he sold it.

M.K. Pritzker, Illinois’ First Lady, bought the cow for $75,000, ending a bidding war with her husband, Gov. JB Pritzker.

The Peoria County teen gets half of that $75,000.

The rest is split between the other champions, 4H, and the FFA (Future Farmers of America).

The State Journal-Register reports that Cole’s sister Olivia also showed a grand champion steer two years ago.
