Four injured in weekend crash on Interstate 55

TOWANDA (WEEK) — Four people were injured and transported to hospitals after a crash on Interstate 55 over the weekend.

At about 5:50 p.m. Sunday near mile post 172 on I-55 northbound, Tanner Kennedy, 21, of Silvis, was driving a  Hyundai Tiburon, lost control and crossed the median and hit a Honda Odyssey that was carrying a driver and two passengers, according to a release by the Illinois State Police.

Kennedy was transported to a hospital via a helicopter from Carle Foundation Hospital at Champaign. The driver and passengers in the Honda were transported to a hospital by ambulances.

One of those injured had to be extricated by the Normal Fire Department, which took about 44 minutes.

Kennedy was issued citations for improper lane usage, too fast for conditions and operating an uninsured vehicle.

The crash closed I-55 southbound for about three hours.
