Illinois American Water has issued a boil order for residential and commercial customers in north Peoria and a portion of Medina Township.
Work on the water system in the area resulted in an unexpected drop in water pressure.
Anytime water pressure drops below 20 pounds per square inch in any part of a community’s distribution system, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency requires that a boil order be issued as a precaution.
Customers in the affected area should bring their water to a rolling boil for 5 minutes before using for drinking or cooking.
Illinois American Water says its standard procedure for a boil order to be in effect for 36 hours, but they are working on getting the issue fixed before then.
