FULTON COUNTY, IL (WEEK) – A gas leak from a Cuba Fast Stop has left a family temporarily displaced.

The Illinois EPA and State Fire Marshall closed the gas station last week. Ameren told the family to leave their home immediately after the gasoline leak was confirmed. The EPA is digging out a trench for all of the contaminated soil and water around the house.

“They basically filled it with dirt and plastic to keep anything from moving from the gas station area over to the residential area,” said Cuba Fire Deputy Chief Mike McCormick. “They have also installed a couple of pipes so later on they can continue to monitor the ground water that’s in that trench to see if anything is still moving that way.”

McCormick says crews will start to filter the gas out of the family’s house within the next few days. It is still unknown when the gas station can start selling fuel again.
