PEORIA, IL (WEEK) – Notre Dame High School students and staff are mourning the loss of another member of the Peoria Notre Dame family.
Coach Sean Gillen passed away over the weekend at just 32-years-old after falling into cardiac arrest just days before.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said Gillen died of a heart arrhythmia. Gillen was taken off life support Saturday night. The coach was brought to surgery at OSF St. Francis Medical Center after he went into cardiac arrest last Monday while working out at a gym.
According to Harwood, a heart arrhythmia is different than a heart attack. He says a heart attack suggests blockage of one or more of the coronary arteries, which was not the case with Gillen.
