PEKIN, Ill. (WEEK) — There are not many restaurants that can withstand the test of time. But then again, there are some that do.

For the past 28 years, this restaurant along North Eighth Street in Pekin has been a familiar sight for many people who live in and around this community. Established in 1991 by Mike Rrushaj, this popular spot has been serving hot dishes to customers for more than two decades.

With the sudden passing of Mike in December of last year, his wife Sophie and son Liridon has been running this place the same way he did, but with only one change.

The business is now called Mike’s Cobbler Corner.

“He loved this place, he loved his customers. In his honor we wanted to make sure we respected that,” said Liridon.

Liridon has been working in this restaurant since he was a teenager in high school where he waited tables.

His mom Sophie…well, let’s just say she’s behind all of these delicious homemade pies you see here. She makes them fresh every day, and there’s a variety of them to choose from.

“Blackberry, strawberry, rhubarb and peach but a lot of people like the apple to,” said Sophie.

She also makes pecan and chocolate pies along with cheese cakes, apple sauce and many more tasty treats that would appease any sweet tooth.

“Every day, you kinda ask yourself what would dad say? We try to maintain his level of quality food and service,” she said.

And I’d say they did. Not only is the food hot, fast and fresh, the customers who come here are also impressed with the prices.

“You’re not going to walk out of here spending and arm and a leg like you do at some places,” said regular customer Greg Davis.

Davis and his mom Becky are regulars here. They stop in to chew the fat often while eating their favorite meals.

“It’s the two by two by two, where you get two hotcakes, two meats and two eggs. So I just go with that,” said  Davis.

The meal I chose was the sliced turkey and dressing with mashed potatoes and brown gravy. It came with a side order of steaming hot broccoli and cheddar soup.

My turkey and dressing were so hot I had to cool it off before eating it.

It was wonderful!

And you know what else was wonderful? The price.

My meal only cost me $8.39.

“The next time you’re in Pekin, come by Mike’s Cobbler Corner because “You Gotta Eat.”
