PEORIA, Ill. (WEEK) — The Peoria Police Department said officers shot and killed a pit bull after three people were attacked in South Peoria on Thursday morning.

Police responded to the area of Livingston and Hayes just after 8 a.m. Police said two people were injured by a group of pit bulls running loose in the neighborhood. One person was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries, while the other declined treatment. A third person was attacked, but not bitten.

Police activated the CodeRED system, telling residents to stay inside until the neighborhood was safe. Several school buses were in the neighborhood at the time, police said.

Officers shot and killed one of the “vicious dogs,” police said. Three other dogs were taken in by Peoria County Animal Protective Services.

The owner of the dogs was found in the 1400 block of S. Arago and cited by PCAPS. The CodeRED alert was lifted just after 8:30 a.m.
