WASHINGTON, Ill. (WEEK) — If you’re in the mood for some good food with people who are like family, come with us to Washington.
That’s the focus of this week’s You Gotta Eat.
Pull up to Amber and Marty’s Fillin’ Station Family Diner on Washington Road in Washington, and you’ll be reminded of the good old days.
The same goes for the inside as well. The walls are filled with iconic pictures, signs, musical instruments and license plates from the days of old. Most of which were donated by the customers
“It gives people a sense of home. If they can look at something that use to hang in their hobby room or something like that, when they come in here to eat, they feel that more comfortable and they keep coming in,” said owner Marty Gray.
Marty and his wife Amber are the owners of this restaurant that bears their names. They wanted to create a place where people can come for a hot meal and feel at home. And according to their customers they delivered.
Do you remember back in the 1990’s when this place was a Casey’s gas station?
Well, it was.
The owners wanted to keep that same motif going, but instead of customers filling up on fuel, they are now filling up on food.
“I like the senior cheeseburger special. It’s a big cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, onions and french fries and all,” said regular customer David Knight.
Not only do Amber and Marty use the Fillin’ Station theme to describe their restaurant, they use the theme on their menu as well…like the usual and unleaded, just to name a few.
But if you want something that’s not on the menu…no problem. Check out these TV 25 pancakes the owners impressed me with.
And speaking of ordering off the menu this group created their own breakfast dish.
They call it the “Volkswagen”… No… Not the German automaker, but a breakfast meal made to order.
Sandy Clayton told me how to make it.
“Grilled rye. You can either use a flat Stanley, which is a sausage patty or crispy bacon, swiss cheese, sauerkraut and horseradish and it’s very good,” said Clayton, a regular at the restaurant.
Check out my plate. Two grilled pork chops with mashed potatoes, brown gravy, green beans and a dinner roll. Look at the steam coming off of my food.
The cost of this delicious meal…$13.35.
So remember, the next time you’re in Washington, stop by Amber and Marty’s Fillin Station because You Gotta Eat.
