“Non-binary” driver’s license gender option bill passes Illinois House

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WEEK) — The Illinois House passed legislation Wednesday allowing people to identify themselves as neither male nor female on their driver’s licenses.

House Bill 3534 passed the House on a 67-38 vote. The bill, sponsored by state Rep. Anne Stava-Murray (D-Naperville), allows people to identify as “non-binary” on their driver’s license, in addition to male or female.

The bill would also require all local governments to offer a “non-binary” option on forms and documents.

The bill now heads to the Senate.
