PEORIA (WEEK) –

Peoria City Council approved a budget amendment Tuesday night, which gives the Peoria Fire and Police Dept. about $50,000 to purchase ballistic vests and helmets.

The body armor would be used by EMT’s in the event of a mass shooting or another mass casualty event. According to the council agenda, the city would purchase five shields, 35 rifle plate vests, 20 ballistic vests and 16 ballistic helmets. The cost comes to $47,547.00. About $20,000 worth of the gear will go to the fire department.

Council members voted to approve the item unanimously, without discussion. To read more about what the fire department would use the equipment for, click here.

The council also approved over $500,000 for a project that will bring 30 new affordable single family homes to the East Bluff neighborhood and voted to place 3 Peoria Police Officers at each of District 150’s high schools. Peoria Public Schools Police Chief Demario Boone said they have done this since 2013 when the state ruled school officers could not be armed.
