BLOOMINGTON-NORMAL (WEEK) – Connect Transit riders in Bloomington-Normal won’t see a hike in fares, at least until next year.

The Connect Transit board voted unanimously Tuesday night to delay the 25 cent per ride fare hike until January 1, 2020.

The fare increase was originally set to start this month, then was delayed to October.

Chairman of the Connect Transit board, Mike McCurdy, said the delay allows the working group time to review the plan and Connect Transit’s finances.

“I was going to go from a dollar to $1.25, if you look at inflation over the last twelve years, that’s about where we should be. We just haven’t had a fare increase in twelve years,” said McCurdy.

Even with the future 25 cent increase, McCurdy said there are budget problems looming for Connect Transit in coming years.
