The Fifteenth Day of the Kirk Zimmerman murder trial has just ended. And after much anticipation, some digital evidence about the defendants location was presented today.
Attorneys for both sides argued for nearly 2 hours about the admission of surveillance video evidence and how it would be presented — and then BPD Detective Bill Lynn took the stand.
Lynn was called as an expert witness in digital forensics. He processed electronics including cell phones and computers from Kirk and Pam Zimmerman, as well as their kids.
Lynn was able to use Pam Zimmerman’s iPhone’s ‘Frequent Locations’ feature to determine the exact time her phone left her office on the night she was killed – 6:03 PM.
Lynn testified the phone was dumped at 6:22 PM. Nineteen minutes after it was taken from Pam Zimmerman’s office. The phone was found in the grass by Bloomington Police just off of Robinson St the day after the murder.
Cell phone data. That’s what Bloomington Detective Bill Lynn used to determine Kirk Zimmerman and his girlfriend at the time deleted Text messages from the night Pam Zimmerman was murdered.
Lynn also used Zimmerman’s home computer, work laptop, and personal laptop in addition to his cell phone in order to piece together a digital timeline of activity leading up to Pam’s death. Lynn says on the day Pam was killed, none of Kirk’s devices showed any activity from 4:11 to 7:00 pm. Lynn testified that Zimmerman deleted all his calls on his phone and the browsing history on his computer.
Lynn also testified that on Oct 24 – Zimmerman accessed Mapquest and zoomed in on an area in Indiana off of US 231 and State Rd 28 between Lafayette and Crawfordsville. Then the next day he looked at a google map depiction of the same area before his cell phone and computer activity went silent from 7:16 am until 1:02 pm. The prosecution believes this is the window where Zimmerman drove to Indiana to obtain a gun.
The trial continues Monday with Det. Lynn expected to testify about the surveillance footage we’ve been anticipating. It supposedly shows Zimmerman’s car in the area right after the murder.
