Two arrested in connection with attempted gas station robbery

DOWNS, Ill. (WEEK) — Two people were arrested in connection with the attempted robbery of a McLean County gas station last month.

McLean County Sheriff Jon Sandage said a 17-year-old male from Bloomington and 20-year-old Joseph D. Matthews of Normal were both arrested in connection with the attempted armed robbery of the Mobil gas station in Downs on Jan. 20.

On Jan. 20, Sandage said an unidentified male walked into the gas station, pulled out a gun and demanded money. However, the male fled the scene before obtaining anything of value, Sandage said.

A McLean County Sheriff’s Deputy pursued the suspect’s vehicle, but soon cut off the chase due to dangerous road conditions.

The 17-year-old Bloomington teen is at the McLean County Juvenile Detention Center. Matthews is at the McLean County Jail awaiting a bond hearing.

The investigation continues. More arrests are possible. Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Evan Henkel at (309) 888-5049.
