Mobile payment technology coming to Salvation Army red kettles

(WEEK) – The familiar red kettles dotting area stores and businesses will be augmented with a piece of technology this season.

Donors will be able to use mobile pay technology – Apple Pay and Google Pay – allowing people with equipped smartphones or smartwatches to tap to donate.

We realize that many shoppers don’t carry much cash, so we hope they can take advantage of this new option,” Major Jesse Collins, Tri-County Commander for The Salvation Army said in a release.

The Salvation Army will officially kick-off its Christmas fund-raising efforts with its Tree of Lights Kick-off at Northwoods Mall on Wednesday evening, November 13 at 6 p.m.

For the second consecutive year, the kick-off ceremonies will take place at the center court at the mall.

“We are grateful for the wonderful relationship we have with Northwoods Mall and are looking forward to another great kick-off at center court next week,” Collins said.

According to the release, about 30% of all the money The Salvation Army collects for the year comes during the holiday season. Those funds help provide meals to homeless families and buy Christmas toys for children.

Last year in Peoria, The Salvation Army assisted nearly 2,000 families with toys, food baskets and coats.

People who wish to help out with bell ringing can call David Shaw at 309- 682-8886.

Those with questions on the new mobile pay technology can call Rich Draeger at 309-655-1348 or 309-253-9909.
