SPRINGFIELD (WEEK) — It’s a sure sign that the state fair is getting closer– the annual “butter cow” has been revealed!
800 pounds of recycled butter make up the cow and it’s kept in a 35 degree refrigerated display case.
The theme for this year is “Building Our Future” — and the cow contains nine hearts hidden within– representing love of dairy products and their essential nutrients.
The cow has become a staple of the state fair, according to John Sullivan, director of the Illinois Department of Agriculture.
“When I was a young man, I was 13 years old the first time I came to the fair, we hard about the butter cow and came over to look at it,” he said. “Every year I’ve been here, it’s always something a little bit different, but a great tradition.
The official opening of the state fair is Thursday, August 8.
If you can’t make it to Springfield, there is a Butter Cow webcam livestream available on the state fair website.
