Trump: Acting Secretary of Defense Shanahan withdraws nomination

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump announced on Twitter that Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan has withdrawn his nomination.

Trump said Army Secretary Mark Esper will be the new acting secretary.

Shanahan began his tenure as Acting Secretary of Defense in January after Retired General James Mattis announced his resignation from the post.

Trump announced he was nominating Shanahan to the cabinet position last month.

This is a breaking story. More to come.
