UPDATE: Autopsy results for 7th grader’s death could take weeks

We’re learning more about the death of a 7th grade student in Mendota. Holy Cross Catholic School student, Karl Soliman, died Saturday evening after he collapsed at a basketball tournament in LaSalle.

Sources told 25 News the boy collapsed during a timeout in the game. That’s when families jumped into action to perform CPR and call for help. The initial call to the gym was for a seizure, but it is unclear if Soliman actually had a seizure. We are told Soliman was taken to a local hospital, then transferred to Rush Hospital in Chicago where he later died.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said the initial autopsy was inconclusive, and it could take a few weeks to learn the cause of the boy’s death.

Monday, students at Holy Cross Catholic School remembered Soliman in a special service where students were encouraged to wear red. The community has been posting photos and comments about Soliman’s memory on the Facebook page “Karl’s Krusaders.”

School officials at Holy Cross declined interviews about Soliman Monday, but we are told he was the oldest of his siblings and was also a part of the band at Northbrook School in Mendota.
