Jessica Thomas sworn in as Peoria County’s first African American countywide official

Peoria County’s new auditor was sworn in Monday.

Jessica Thomas is the first African American to be elected to a countywide position.

She said this is “major” to have diverse representation after her ceremony Monday.

We asked what her first priorities are in her new job.

“To get the duties back, and get the staff back, and get the budget back,” said Thomas, “Some other thing’s I’d like to do in the community, is educate the community on local government, what each office does.”

Thomas said when she started her campaign, she had no idea she would be the first African American to take a countywide spot.
