Loving all creatures great and small makes Kitty Yanko the ideal person to fill the shoes as the Education Coordinator at the Peoria Humane Society.
Paws to Read literacy program, lessons on pet care and safety around animals, pet therapy programs, the blessing of the animals, be kind to animals celebration, connection between animal abuse and human violence, story time and summer camps at the Shelter…if any of this sounds familiar then you have been touched by Kitty’s work.
Teaching the core concepts of peace, responsibility, kindness and respect for animals and each other in area schools, Kitty stresses that if you can learn to be kind to animals then you can be kind to others as well. Kitty enjoys helping our furry friends by organizing pet CPR and first aid classes and coordinating the distribution of safety vests for local Peoria City Police and Peoria County Sheriff’s K-9 dogs. Her efforts also resulted in oxygen masks for animals at local fire departments.
Whenever the need arises Kitty is up for the challenge: A natural disaster such as the Pekin and Washington tornado? Kitty had therapy dogs on site to help those individuals traumatized by the event. A true friend to our animals, with a concern for those in need, she encourages others to get involved and to make a difference for animals through volunteering.
Let’s give Kitty a high paw up instead of a high five and welcome her to the Women in Leadership.
