(WEEK) - A Democrat is entering the race to replace 17th District U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, who's not running for reelection next year.

On his website, Rockford Alderman Jonathan Logemann says he's a high school business and economics teacher, an Illinois Army National Guard member, and Afghanistan War veteran.

In a statement, Logemann told 25 News he's also a "proud" union member.

"Whether it’s the importance of protecting and expanding affordable health care, investing in quality education for the next generation, taking care of our veterans when they return home, or protecting American democracy and our freedoms, we need a renewed focus on solving problems, and less finger-pointing and bickering,” Logemann said.

Two Quad Cities area Republicans are also in the race. They are Charlie Helmick and Esther Joy King, who narrowly lost to Bustos in 2020.

The 17th District covers parts of Peoria, west-central Illinois - including Canton - and the Rockford area. Bustos, a Democrat, was first elected in 2012. Bustos announced in late April that she would not run for another term.
