NORMAL (WEEK) - It has been six years since the national blood inventory was this low, and now local medical centers are asking donors to roll up their sleeves to help fight the shortage.

According to a press release sent out Tuesday, the American Red Cross needs to collect at least 10K additional blood products each week over the next month to overcome the current blood and platelet shortage happening nationwide.

To help combat the shortage, American Red Cross is teaming up with Carle BroMenn Medical Center and Carle Eureka Hospital in an effort to encourage more Central Illinois community members to donate.

Appointments can be made by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS.
