PEORIA (WEEK) - Once a month the parking lot of Revelations Auto Sales and Detailing served as a food pantry for those in need.
The wanted people to come as they were and take what they needed.
“The 61605 zip code is known to be a food desert," Senior Pastor Anthony Randle of Servant of Christ Ministries. "This is our way of saying that we can still survive.”
Randle said his goal was to fill the food needs of his community in any way he could. This included bi-weekly hot food giveaways and freezers full of food.
People were welcome to come pick up food at any time.
“We’re giving back to our community regardless of the stigma," Randle said. "Regardless of what’s being said, regardless of this-that-and-the other. There’s life in the desert and we’re giving back. We’re going to nourish that.”
The pantry offered produce, frozen food, meats, snacks and cleaning supplies.
Lois Smith said pantries like Pastor Randle’s were integral in helping the community.
“What grocery store is closest to your home," we asked.
“None," Smith said. “You have to either catch the bus, call a cab or call a friend. You got to get a ride the best way you can.”
Pastor Randle said he would continue to deliver food to the neighborhood until the need was met.
“This is our way of saying that we could still survive.”
