TREMONT (WEEK) -- Turkey sandwiches, carnival rides and live music is returning to Tremont this weekend.

After being canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tremont Turkey Festival will hold its 55th annual event Friday through Sunday.

Organizers started planning for the event in January and set up began Tuesday morning with the help of 1,000 volunteers.

Originally, the festival was created to put money into the Tremont pool. Now, money goes back to the town as a whole.

General Chair Brad Patterson said this year's theme is "Light up the Darkness."

"Really, this is one of the first festivals that kicks everything off as we're going in to Phase 5 this weekend, so (we're) really excited to bring it back and bring some normalcy back," said Patterson. "(We're) hoping the festival can take away a little bit of the darkness that's going on in the world right now and make some fun."

Volunteers started injecting turkeys at 5 a.m. Thursday morning in preparation for the festival. Sandwiches, turkey legs and wings will be ready to go when the festival kicks off at 11 a.m. Friday.
