MARSHALL COUNTY (WEEK) - A Central Illinois firefighter has died from burns he suffered in an explosion on Saturday in his father's machine shed in rural Sparland.
Chaise Mangold, 21, was working on a truck when gas fumes built up in the shed, and there was an explosion about 3:15 p.m. Saturday, said Lacon-Sparland Fire Chief Rich Koch.
Mangold's father and two friends were also in the machine shed and are said to be recovering from their injuries.
The chief said the state fire marshal's office is investigating the cause.
The chief said Mangold was a volunteer firefighter for three years for the Lacon-Sparland department.
Mangold lived in Lacon, according to the chief. He was one of 23 volunteer firefighters with the department.
A GoFundMe page has raised almost $25,000 for Mangold's family, and Chief Koch said donations will be accepted at First National Bank of Lacon.
Tanners Orchard in Speer is also hosting a fundraiser, selling apple cider donuts Saturday with 60% of the sales going toward medical expenses.
