EAST PEORIA (WEEK) - One of East Peoria Mayor John Kahl's goals is to clean up the city, and he's finding it frustrating because trash continues to accumulate along roads maintained by the state.

"This has been a sore subject in this community for a very long time," said Kahl.

"People aren't responsible. They throw litter out every single day," said the mayor.

It's the Illinois Department of Transportation, not city crews, that maintain many of these roads, and the mayor said IDOT is not doing maintenance as often as they should.

"I've always been slightly embarrassed by Illinois and the lack of maintenance whether it's mowing, weeds, or litter," said Mayor Kahl.

He went on to say, "I think we can do a much better job, and it goes into the pride. Where's the pride at?"

IDOT said its crews have been cutting and clearing trees, and later this week, they'll shift focus to trash pickup.

Meantime, the mayor says East Peoria is holding a city-wide cleanup May 1 starting at 8:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome to help out.
