EAST PEORIA (WEEK) -- Lane closures are coming to Interstate 74 in East Peoria as construction on the Pinecrest bridge gets started.
The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Tuesday removal of the bridge at exit 98 on I-74 will begin Friday, March 5.
Lane closures for one or both directions on Pinecrest Drive are expected between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday through Sunday for about four weeks, according to IDOT's announcement.
On the interstate, however, all lanes in both directions will be closed between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., with traffic detouring using the off and on ramps.
The work is part of a $9.6 million project to replace the Pinecrest Drive bridge.
Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
The new bridge will have a minimum clearance of 16 feet 6 inches, or two feet higher than the existing bridge. The entire project is expected to be complete in November.
