Bottles to the rescue with H20 fountains shut down

PEORIA (WEEK) - The pandemic has forced a lot of water fountains out of commission, causing an issue for public schools.

Members of the Peoria Federation of Teachers delivered bottled water Friday to Von Steuben Middle School.

Union head Jeff Adkins-Dutro says it's not the only school struggling with supply.

Most fountains and bottle filling stations are taped off to avoid the passing of germs.

"It's an issue where you have to cover up all the ways to drink water so that students don't get COVID, but there's no alternative… We're trying to get the district to give out a bottle of water at least with breakfast and lunch, so that students can stay hydrated," Adkins-Dutro said.

He believes it could take a long time until drinking fountains are deemed safe again.

However, the filling station at the RiverPlex weight room on the second floor and the other one on the first floor are functioning.
