NORMAL, Ill. (WEEK) -- The Normal Fire Department says numerous rail crossings in town are blocked by a major freight train derailment.
Normal Fire Department Public Information Officer Matt Swaney says it happened early Saturday morning between Fell Street and Vernon Avenue.
He adds there are no hazardous materials involved, and no one was injured, but traffic will be affected on many major rail crossings.
Current railroad crossings that are closed are University Street, Fell Street, Broadway Street, Linden Street, College Avenue, Mulberry Street, Beech Street, and Willow Street/Ford Jesse Road. Also closed is the railroad underpass at Vernon Avenue and Beaufort Street.
Authorities are asking you not to approach the train, or the tracks to attempt to take photos of video. While there are no hazardous materials involved, there are power lines down, and portions of the train or track maybe energized, posing an electrocution hazard. It is also unlawful to trespass on railroad property, and it could result in fines or arrest.
There is no timetable for when the crossings will be open, as Swaney says this will be an extended operation.
