Peoria, Ill. (WEEK) -- A non-profit is opening up a fresh produce market in one of Peoria's food desert.
Peoria Grown is partnering with the park district to use Logan Recreational Center for the site of Market 309.
For the winter months, Market 309 is working with Hy-Vee on Sheridan to work with vendors to get fresh produce and in the summer they'll use local farmers.
The non-profit will sell these items at cost to those who live in the 61605 zipcode.
"Not everyone can stretch the budget to be able to incorporate more fresh produce because they are for whatever reason more expensive than eating a McDonald's hamburger," said Julie Eliathamby with Peoria Grown.
In the beginning the market will only be open on Sundays from noon until 3:00 p.m.
They hope to be able to take EBT cards no later than March.
