PEORIA, Ill. (WEEK) -- Peoria Firefighters were forced to evacuate a vacant building that was on fire overnight in the North Valley Neighborhood.
Battalion Chief Stephen Rada says the call came in at 11:15 PM Wednesday night in the 700 block of Northeast Madison Avenue. That is between St. Mary's Cathedral and the Friendship House.
Rada says when crews arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from a three story home.
Once inside, firefighters reached the basement, where it appeared the bulk of the fire was at.
"At that time, the entire first floor flashed open with fire. We had to withdraw fire crews for safety," Rada said. "Crews got out in time, because the stairs had actually burned out," Rada added.
The Battalion Chief adds it took about 15 minutes to safely get back inside, where they found more fire throughout the building.
It ended up taking 45 minutes to get the fire under control and put out.
He adds it appears no one was inside the home when the fire started, and it appears no one was injured.
The cause remains under investigation.
Damage estimates is $100,000, with the home being demolished.
