BLOOMINGTON (WEEK) - The swimming pool at Bloomington High School will forever be linked to the coach who devoted four decades to the swimming program there.
The District 87 School Board Wednesday night gave its blessing to naming the facility the Bob Loy Natatorium, honoring the popular coach who died October 29 at age 65.
Loy graduated from Illinois State University in 1977, and was an All-American swimmer there. He coached BHS swimmers for 40 years and also taught at community swim clubs.
The BHS Athletic Department said in a memo to the board that "Coach Loy had the rare ability to challenge and push athletes to new levels of ability while also making it a fun and memorable experience."
School administrators said Loy also mentored many teachers during his career.
