PEORIA (WEEK) -- Restaurants that have gone above and beyond in their COVID-19 efforts to keep customers safe are being highlighted by the Peoria City County Environmental Health Department.

Food program coordinator, Stephanie Streight, said the 'COVID-19 Safety Excellence Award' was made to make sure the businesses following guidelines were given the spotlight.

Some qualities of an award winner Streight said are having tables six feet apart, employees wearing masks and extra disinfecting efforts.

There have already been over 190 nominations Streight said for local food establishments.

"Some other states or counties are calling out more of the places that aren't complying, we really wanted to highlight the places that are and give them some good attention," Streight continued, "And maybe people can find out about place that they never knew about before and know 'hey other people are saying this is a really safe place to go to and give them some business.'"

Nominations will be taken until December 1st. To nominate a business, fill out the Peoria City County Environmental Health Facebook nomination form.
