PEORIA (WEEK) - The Peoria Fire Department wants to make sure you keep an eye on what you fry this holiday season.
The department said there are three times as many fires on Thanksgiving due to cooking than any average day.
"Some of the reasons for the fires on Thanksgiving are like any other time, they aren't paying attention, they might leave the room or attend to their kids, or talk to relatives," said Peoria Division Chief of Fire Prevention, Stan Taylor. "Also people putting oven mitts to close the flames that are on the stove and catching on fire."
If your planning to cook your turkey in an aluminum pan, use two instead of one to assure extra strength and make sure nothing leaks to the bottom of the oven causing a fire.
If you enjoy deep frying your turkey, the department said to make sure you completely thaw the turkey before you put it in the oven, otherwise the ice can cause it to explode.
