One dead after car hits train in Putnam County

PUTNAM COUNTY (WEEK) -- Authorities say the driver of a car that struck a train early Thursday morning in Putnam County has died.

The accident happened just after 4:40 a.m. at the railroad crossing on East 1300 Street, about a half mile south of Ill. Highway 71 in Granville Township, according to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office says evidence shows the vehicle was traveling southbound on East 1300 Street when it struck the train. The driver was the only occupant and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The identity of the driver is being withheld pending notification of family.

The accident remains under investigation by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Police Reconstruction Unit, Norfolk Southern Railroad Police and Putnam County Death Investigator.
