(WEEK) -- The Peoria Riverfront Museum will be receiving $700,000 in state grants to help support its STEM Inspires program for dome planetarium capital upgrades.

Gov. JB Pritzker announced the funding Wednesday, totaling $22.8 million for museums throughout Illinois.

Also receiving funding through the grants is Miller Park Zoo in Bloomington for its South America project. The state awarded the zoo $750,000.

The grants are through the Illinois Public Museum Capital Grants Program.

The maximum grant award for the projects announced today was $750,000 and matching funds are required in many cases based on museum attendance levels, according to the state's announcement.

"Our public museums help tell the story of Illinois, from the founding and cultural heritage of local communities, to our place in the world today," Gov. Pritzker said in the announcement. "This grant program is making investments in local museums that will allow them to attract more visitors, to foster important research, and to tell important stories for generations to come.”
