Peoria (WEEK - Despite the rain a group in Peoria took to the trails to honor a fallen Navy SEAL with Central Illinois roots.

Runners put on their gloves and laced up their sneakers for a run in rememberance of U.S Chief Petty Officer Ryan Owens who died after a raid in Yemen in Janurary of 2017.

Owens was an Illinois Valley Central High School Graduate.

His brother started The Naked Warrior Project, a charity working to build memorials for Navy SEALS killed in combat.

After hearing about his story of sacrifice, JD Dalfonso organized a local run to mirror a larger event taking place in Flordia to raise funds for the charity.

"What we are doing here for just a couple hours is nothing compared to what the service members are put through. " said Dalfonso, "Traveling half way around the world, being away from family, ultimately putting their mind and body to work, and the of course the ultimate sacrifice is paid in some cases."

Dalfonso hopes that in future years when gatherings are possible they can hold a larger event to honor Owens.

The Chillicothe Post Office bears Owen's name after a dedication in 2018.
