TAZEWELL COUNTY (WEEK) -- Voters in Tazewell County showed up in record numbers forming long lines for the first weekend of early voting.

According to the Tazewell County Clerk's office as of 2 pm on Sunday, 7,187 votes were cast. In the 2016 election, the county saw a total of 4,718 early voters.

The office also reported record mail in votes with the county already processing 22,608 ballots. In 2016, the previous record, 2,800 votes were cast via mail.

Tazewell County Clerk John C. Ackerman said he was amazed by the numbers this weekend and wanted to thank voters for their patience.

"We are amazed by the overwhelming heavy participation in Early Voting this year. My office thanks our amazing Election Judges for their commitment of service to our communities," Ackerman said in a press release. "As well as thanking the understanding citizens that waited in occasional long lines to cast their votes."

This year the county consolidated many of its offsite early voting locations in order to provide constancy among dates and times, as well as doubling the amount of days the sites are available.

Offsite early voting for the county continues next weekend from 9 am to 6 pm Friday, 10 am to 4 pm Saturday and 9 am to 2 pm Sunday at all locations. Tazewell County citizens can vote early at the county clerk's office in Pekin through Election Day.
