EAST PEORIA (WEEK) -- One local library district is going fine free starting Tuesday.
The Fondulac District Library announced the board of trustees has revised polices to stop the assessment of overdue fines, as well as clearing all outstanding fines on checked-out items.
"The library is implementing these changes to provide the community with more equitable access to library materials and services. Studies have shown that fines do not motivate borrowers to return items on time and actually make people less likely to visit or return to the library. Eliminating fines as a financial barrier will expand access, services, and benefits to the FDL community," a statement from the library read.
The move was in part of the celebration for national Library Card Sign-Up Month.
Patrons of the library are still expected to adhere to loan periods and return or renew items before the dew date. Those who check out items are still responsible for the repair, replacement or collection fees for lost or damaged items, according to the library's statement.
