NORMAL (WEEK) - Hundreds of 2020 high school grads are a part of a club they didn't sign up for - not walking the stage and receiving their diploma in person.
Though some districts opted for virtual ceremonies, that wasn't the case for Normal Community High and Normal West's seniors.
Both schools were scheduled to have graduation events at Corn Crib Stadium, but in a post on Facebook, the schools said "Due to the current and upcoming weather...graduation ceremonies have been canceled. We are sad that weather and the pandemic have changed how the Class of 2020 ended their high school career."
after getting postponed due to the pandemic, unit 5 announced today they have canceled both the normal community and normal west graduation ceremonies. both were set to happen at the corn crib stadium in normal..
But with the threat of rain in the forecast Saturday afternoon, the anticipated graduation ceremonies were cancelled.
A decision some parents and graduating seniors like Mackenzie Ryan find unacceptable.
"I mean I wish they had a plan B, I mean and it does make me mad that the school isn't doing enough and it's showing me that they don't care. Like, 'Oh it's just a graduation, doesn't mean anything to anybody.' but I mean to a lot of us, it means something," explained Ryan.
A Unit 5 spokesperson said the district made the decision, not the facility. She added that at the time of what would have been the normal community graduation, it was pouring down rain.
The Facebook post from Unit 5 says there is no alternate date, so the graduation ceremonies will not be made up.
