EAST PEORIA (WEEK) - The Fon du Lac Park District wants to remind everyone to practice safe boating over the holiday weekend.
Another popular replacement for many of the cancelled fireworks shows this year is boating. The park district has some crucial safety tips that can keep boaters safe while on the water.
Rule number one, all aboard the boat must wear a life jacket. The U.S. Coast Guard says they could have prevented over 80 percent of boating deaths.
Another huge risk factor while boating is alcohol. It is reported a third of all recreational boating deaths involved liquor.
Finally, with no fireworks on the Illinois river this year Fon du Lac ark District Director says some might try to shoot them off their boats instead, and he warns of how dangerous that is.
"Number one, it's illegal. You could be arrested for reckless operation of a water craft or disorderly conduct. Two, you're dealing with water craft that have anywhere from 30 to 50 gallons of gasoline. Probably not a good idea to be shooting anything off that has fire attached to it on a water craft," said Michael Johnson.
Johnson wants to remind everyone, if you do happen to run into any issues while on the water, call the park district and they will send out a boat to assist you.
