Protests turn to looting, destruction in Champaign
CHAMPAIGN (WEEK) - Early Saturday afternoon, protesters in Champaign took aim at the Market Place Shopping Center. A peaceful protest became a smash and grab looting in an instant.
Macy's, Old Navy, Lenscrafters, Kohl's, and several other storefronts had shattered windows as people ran in the store and came out carrying clothes and other items.
Police arrived shortly after the initial glass breaking. They formed a perimeter in front of the doors at Macy's where a large crowd then gathered. In video posted by WAND TV in Champaign, you can see protesters screaming in the face of police officers.
The protests then spilled into the streets and into storefronts that weren't police protected.
