PEORIA (WEEK) - Health officials had convenience in mind when they chose the fourth COVID-19 testing site, focusing on everything from location, to comfort when it comes to getting tested.
This additional testing site comes with multiple benefits. Major AJ Ruggieri says it is convenient because, not only can people drive through, they also have the option to walk up.
"We have the two options so folks shouldn't be afraid to come in their car and drive through, or if they need to take public transportation, or don't have a car, they're more than welcome to come do the walk up test," said Major AJ.
The new location is central in Peoria and only steps away from the City Link bus station.
The site will also be using a new, less invasive swab technique, instead of the swab that you reach all the way back into the throat.
"It's a q-tip like swab. you just push it up into the nasal cavity into your nostril, about an inch and a half to an inch. You swirl it a round a couple times, you wait 15 seconds, you do the same thing in the other nostril, then you put it in the vile and hand it back to the national guardsmen," said Major AJ.
Major AJ added the qualifications to be tested have broadened.
"We certainly have priorities, like first responders, healthcare workers, essential employees, folks over 65, folks with underlying medical conditions, folks that believe they've been near someone and possibly exposed to COVID-19, and otherwise folks with symptoms but we encourage people to come out if you feel you need to be tested," said Major AJ.
This site will be open 7 days a week from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the exception of Memorial Day.
