(WEEK) -- Caterpillar Inc. announced it has notified employees of additional layoffs amid the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
On Thursday, Caterpillar notified some members of its workforce that the company is reducing some full-time support, management and production positions, spokesperson Kate Kenny said.
Affected areas include Peoria, Decatur, Aurora and some sites in Minnesota.
Kenny said the layoffs are in response to the pandemic and to improve the company's "competitiveness during this period of economic uncertainty."
"The actions are global in nature and impact both employees and agency workers," Kenny said.
Earlier this week, Caterpillar released its first quarter 2020 results, reporting a 39% decrease in profit per share, and a 21% decrease in sales of revenue of $13.5 billion.
In March, the company announced indefinite layoffs at its KK Building in East Peoria.
