COVID-19 isn’t slowing local construction projects

PEORIA (WEEK) - Construction trades are considered essential under Gov. JB Pritzker's executive order, meaning local developer Kim Blickenstaff's projects are moving forward even as the community combats COVID-19.

Blickinstaff is known for big projects like the Scottish Rite Cathedral, New Loft Apartments, a hotel in Peoria Heights, and bringing back Al Fresco Park.

Greg Birkland, chief executive officer of the KBD Group, said the skilled workers are at least 20 feet apart, beyond the guidance for social distancing.

"The projects we have, they are extremely separated. They are all working in different areas of that building, so not one or two people are actually working together. They are all separate," Birkland said.

Of the six projects underway, the renovation of Peoria's Scottish Rite Cathedral is still expected to be completed in June.
