PEORIA HEIGHTS (WEEK) - Several area fire departments were called to battle a fire Friday afternoon at a senior living apartment complex in Peoria Heights.
The fire was contained to only one of the apartments at Galena Park Terrace at 5533 N. Galena Rd, according to the Peoria Heights Fire Department.
Firefighters were called about 3 p.m. Peoria Heights Police already on the scene reported heavy smoke coming from one of the buildings. Firefighters said it took about 10 minutes to knock down the fire. Its cause is under investigation.
"The good thing is, they're made out of block and brick, so very little wood to burn in there, but it was fully involved from top to bottom. There's nothing in it that's salvageable. Television, electronics; there's nothing in there that's salvageable. It's all burnt up," said Peoria Heights Fire Chief Greg Walters.
Fire officials said one person was taken to an area hospital, but it was not clear whether the situation was related to the fire or a separate medical emergency.
Firefighters from Peoria, West Peoria, Chillicothe, and Limestone were providing mutual aid for the Peoria Heights Fire Department. An Advanced Medical Transport ambulance was also on the scene.
