Spacecraft to be named after Bradley alum, first African American Astronaut

PEORIA (WEEK) -- Bradley alum and first African American astronaut Major Robert H. Lawrence Jr. is being honored by having a spacecraft, which is set to launch this Friday, named after him.

He was a 1956 chemistry graduate of Bradley University before making history as the first African American Astronaut.

In 1967, Lawrence died in a plane crash while training another pilot. Since his death, Bradley has honored his legacy by establishing a memorial scholarship in his name and dedicating a conference room in Olin Hall.

The S.S. Robert H. Lawrence will be ready to launch on Sunday, February 9.
