Lessons to learn- Universalist Unitarian Church celebrates MLK Jr legacy

On Monday, many will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr and a Peoria church used their Sunday service to share his lessons.

Reverend Dave Clements from Universalist Unitarian Church in Peoria said the powerful messages that Dr King stood for still ring true today, especially his belief that everyone can make a difference.

Clements said King always emphasized the importance of coming together and standing up for what's right, and when there is injustice, to give those that are being marginalized a voice.

But in order to understand what you can do, you must know what has been done.

"That's why it's important to come together to celebrate his life and his legacy, and then to recognize that unless we do something his efforts are in vain and we don't want them to be in vain and that is how we can make a difference and how we can move forward embracing what Martin Luther King Jr taught us." said Revered Clements

The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. The holiday was signed into law in 1983 and was first observed three years later.
