Gearing up for 21st Annual Frosty 5K walk/run in Peoria

You don't have to train by running ten miles a day, or do any fancy stretch ---unless you like--- to gear up for this year's Frosty 5k.

The annual Family Core fundraiser invites everyone from avid runners who'll likely be timing out their miles to folks who simply enjoy a brisk stride, and ever your four-legged family for a one-mile dog walk.

For twenty one years the non-profit (formerly known as Counseling and Family Services) has successfully hosted the event which has morphed from a fun run, collecting money and coats for area kids, to the multi tiered athletic event that allows FC to raise money to support their various programs.

The organization which is widely known for it's adoption and counseling services, also boasts successful youth outreach and single parent programs, along with foster care.

"We serve over fifteen thousand individuals every year. There's many needs we're finding for those families and the resources for this event go toward providing counseling for families who can't afford it.", explained Family Core CEO Ann Lading-Ferguson. Further sharing her vision to help FC families become more productive and independent, she added "...it could be daily essentials that people take for granted, but it's things we can provide for those families to make sure they can get on track."

Serving thousands of people each year is no small feat and the organization recognizes the contributions of its supporters and runners at the end of the race during an after party.

That portion of the event is complete with tables decorated by fruit, candy and assorted snacks for participants, as prizes are doled out and the race winners from each age category are recognized and subsequently adorned with medals.

Oh, Frosty will be making an appearance as well - lending a smile for post-race selfies.

If you're a race newbie, you can expect Family Core staff and total strangers to cheer you on throughout every leg of the course, just as excited for you as if they were running.

The walk/run is a Peoria winter staple, known for it's excited supporters and dedicated runners; many of whom come out every year, including 2019 when temps hit a record low for race day dropping down to -10; allowing some runners to sport frosty eyelids as they crossed the finish.

Don't worry - this year will be nothing like that and the weather is expected to be unseasonably mild in comparison to past years.

The 5K spans 3.1 miles starting at 9am Janurary 25th from RC Outfitters and ends at the Gateway Building on Peoria's downtown waterfront.
