PEORIA (WEEK) — This holiday season, the Peoria Fire Department working to keep its wreath red.
The wreaths, which are displayed on the outside of all fire stations, are lighted with red bulbs. However, for each house or commercial fire in December, a bulb will be changed to white.
The goal is to raise awareness for fire safety and hazards in cold months and to encourage residents to “Keep the Wreath Red.”
In 2018, there were 12 fire-related incidents with over $78,500 in estimated damages during the campaign, according to the PFD.
“We like to hang this visual out for the public to see — maybe pay attention to it and notice it as they drive past our fire houses throughout the city and maybe that will bring to their mind the forefront of safety,” said Assistant chief Jim Bachman.
The campaigned started in the 1980s by the Illinois Fire Chiefs Association. It’s Peoria’s 24th year for participating.
